Federal Government

Project Description:

In an effort to more accurately identify the types of persons who trespass on railroad rights-of-way, and ultimately reduce the number of trespassing events, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (U.S. DOT) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) contracted with North American Management (NAM) to conduct a demographic and market analysis of decedents in railroad-trespasser incidents occurring between 2005 and 2010. Achieved a 54 % response rate on mail survey to respective coroners/CMEs for 2,662 of the reported fatalities using follow-up/reminder emails and telephone calls. NAM conducted additional outreach to coroners and chief medical examiners (CME) to obtain additional demographic information. Produced demographic and behavioral profiles using appended market data. Presented findings to FRA management and to rail industry at national rail safety conference.
